Grandparent Fraud

Hanover Police have been receiving increased reports of completed and attempted frauds targeting Hanover’s elderly population. The most common scheme is when fraudsters contact an elderly person claiming to be a grandchild or some other legal professional. The scammer then reports that the grandchild is in some sort of peril (i.e. arrested, held hostage, etc.) and need money to secure their release. The culprits request that money be sent usually in the form of online gift cards or money transfers. Hanover Police are urging family members to speak to vulnerable persons regarding this commonly occurring scheme.
