Computer Fraud

On Saturday, April 10th, 2021, Hanover Police responded to a possible fraud in 800 block of 10th Street. Through investigation, it was determined that scammer(s) had disabled the victim’s computer (likely by the victim clicking on a fraudulent link). Once in control of the computer the fraudster(s) extorted the victim for $1600.00 in gift cards by claiming they needed them in order to release the computer. An alert local business recognized the fraud and contacted police prior to more money being lost by the victim. Hanover Police are cautioning members of the public to not fall prey to these types of frauds. You are best to contact a local computer repair shop if you believe your computer maybe infected with fraud malware.  If anyone has information about this fraud, they are asked to contact the Hanover Police Service or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or by submitting a secure Web Tip.
